In addition to the fitness programs, The FitWit Foundation also offers high-quality tutoring programs, further strengthening the mission to help children lead healthy and successful lives.  The “Wit” side of the FitWit programming derives from our years of experience as educators in the public school system.  It was created originally as a reaction to the lack of adequate small-group or 1-on-1 tutoring programs available to struggling students that we witnessed in many low-income, under-resourced schools.

These programs operate under the premise that a good teacher/tutor is the key component in student achievement – far more important than environment, resources or supplies.  Thus, we only work with tutors who possess a solid background of success and genuinely care about raising students’ achievement levels.  Relying on our own highly successfully teaching experiences as well as the latest best practices research, we train each tutor to utilize simple but effective teaching techniques/systems to help their students learn.

We only offer two different types of tutoring programs: 1. Programs paid for by individual schools for small-group tutoring  2. Tutoring done through the Supplemental Education Services(SES) program.  Under the first program, schools hire The FitWit Foundation to work with its students, normally in a small-group setting.  Schools generally have a certain population or sub-set of students for which they want to provide additional support.  In some cases, this may be a 3-day/week after-school program for students struggling in math. In other cases, we’ve worked with groups of students in the middle of the school day, who may need just a little extra attention to go from good to great.
Regardless, our procedures for this program generally follow this outline:

  1. Meet with school to discuss goals.
  2. Create and train a team of tutors to work with small groups of students to accomplish specific goals.
  3. Implement tutoring program and follow up with administration with progress reports and assessment results.

We charge schools an hourly rate for each tutor, as well as any supplemental resources that may be needed to carry out the program.

The second program we offer (SES tutoring) is paid for by the local education agencies (school districts) under the national No Child Left Behind legislation.  If a school does not meet Adequate Yearly Progress for 3 years in a row, low-income students who attend that school can receive free tutoring.  Schools must offer parents an application and information regarding eligible tutoring companies, and then parents can choose a provider for their child.  The FitWit Foundation is an approved provider for the state of Georgia, and we’ve received the highest quality marks from the Georgia Department of Education monitoring program in each of the last 3 years.

We currently offer these two programs to schools throughout the Atlanta metro region, and for the last 2 years, we’ve worked with the elementary, middle and high schools in the City of Decatur School system.  We’ve gotten positive feedback from every school we’ve gone into, and we have impressive test improvements that document our program’s effectiveness.
